This summer we decided to tackle a restoration of our front door. While it was on our “some day it would be nice to do” list, one day the door knob broke and the only way to get the door open was to cut through the bolt which meant it was time for the update!


There were two main challenges on this project: the first was to find some proper reproduction hardware, and the second was dealing with a door that has an offset that is much larger (5.75”) than standard doors. We found some excellent mid-century door sets at Rejouvenation.com. The great thing was that they also had an extender which used the same system as the original extender. The original bolt was extended from the knob using a total of 3 sections including 1 extenders. Unfortunately the extender that we purchased from Rejouvenation was too long, but we discovered if we used the new bolt and knob with the original extenders, then everything fit together perfectly.


Once we had the hardware issue solved, the rest was all about finding a way to bring the door back to the way it was intended to be. Here’s what we did:
