The master bath was the only part of the house where anything was added to the original design of the house.

The original bathroom didn’t look like it had changed since it was installed. The cabinetry was custom built and followed the same design as the cabinetry in the dressing room, and the countertop was covered in a terrific period laminate. However, we really wanted to have a  shower in the house, so in order to accommodate that we decided to remove the small closet opposite the sinks, and then install the shower in the are where the toilet was originally located.

To do that, the walls were stripped and the insulation updated and the entire floor and subfloor was replaced in order to facilitate the upgraded plumbing. To replace the sinks, two generic bathroom cabinets were installed from Home Depot, the idea being we would create custom fronts in a more mid-century modern style.

In 2008 after living with the original colours for a few years, we decided to update the bathroom by changing the color and the floor tile, and replace the front of the cabinets with a more design correct style, including period correct handles that we found at The Art of Hardware here in town.
